Tips for a day on the beach

A lazy day on the beach allows for lots of time spent together with the family and the chance to clear your mind. The kids will just love spending time together and enjoying the beach and the fresh air. It’s pure luxury – so just do it!

Sun, sun and more sun
North Jutland is one of the areas of Denmark which is blessed by the highest number of hours of sunshine on a yearly basis. Some people claim that this is due to magnetic fields in the substratum, whilst others say it’s due to a happy coincidence in geographical conditions, and finally there’s a theory about the influence of the Norwegian fells. Whatever the reason, come to North Jutland and enjoy the sun.

Learn to collect amber
Did you know that the beach at Lyngså Strand is the one of best places in Denmark to look for amber? Recently, one of Sæby’s holiday guests found the biggest piece of amber ever discovered. The piece of amber in question was the size of a fist and weighed 420 grams. Experienced amber hunters choose to visit Sæby at a time of year in which storms and onshore breezes ensure optimum conditions for finding amber. Go on one of the amber trips led by amber polisher Frantz Kristensen and learn how to increase your chances of a successful treasure hunt. Frantz represents the third generation of a family of amber polishers and is the owner of the museum, Ravmuseet, in Sæby, so he’s sure to know what he’s talking about. www.visitsaeby.dk

Refreshingly cold well-being in a bottle
Treat yourself to Læsø’s delicious bottled mineral water containing nature’s own ingredients to which Læsø’s famous salt is added. The salt boosts the natural sweetness of the drink and makes the water soft. Try apple & lemon, elderflower & lemon, or how about aronia & elderflower & strawberry or aronia & elderflower & blackcurrant? The summer’s healthy alterative. Fun for kids
You can build sandcastles on the beach regardless of whether the sun’s shining or whether it’s one of those rainy summer days. Remember buckets, spades and other equipment required to make your sandcastle absolutely perfect. Use stones, shells, feathers and seaweed as decoration. Kites are always a guaranteed success – they’re cheap to buy and need only a little wind… and if it’s not windy, then tetherball and badminton are also great fun.

Entertainment for adults
Even if you’re an adult, you can challenge your boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife or friends to a game on the beach. French cricket, beach volleyball or a Frisbee all provide plenty of fun. Petanque (boules) is the favourite sport of the French and is perfect for the beach since there’s no chance of the heavy balls being blown away by a sea breeze.

Dinner on the beach
Take the barbecue down onto the beach and make a real evening of it. A couple of sausages on the grill and good bread are enough to keep the whole family happy. If you take some warm blankets with you, you can also keep warm following the evening’s last dip in the sea. Remember that the sand underneath the barbecue can get extremely hot.

Remember sunscreen!
The sun provides warmth and lots of healthy vitamin D. But you’re sure to have heard it before: Remember sunscreen! With Derma’s great products you can be sure of the best possible protection. These products do not contain perfumes, parabens or artificial colours. So you can soak up the sun with a clear conscience. See www.derma.dk

Take your own shade with you
Even though you may be covered in a thick layer of sunscreen lotion with high protection factor, it’s still a good idea to take a parasol or a cap with you, particularly if you’re planning to stay on the beach all day. If you have children with you, it’s a good idea to bring a beach tent in which they can take a midday nap out of the sun.
