Blokhus

Blokhus – once a fishing village – is now the centre of a charming international holiday paradise where it is the local restaurants and tourist shops that set the tone for the town.

Blokhus sømærkeBlokhus was originally a small fishing village where the fishing cutters were hauled directly up onto the beach. Though they aren’t there anymore, fishing still takes place from small boats and you can buy fish all year round. The former fishing village is now a pulsating holiday resort which has attracted visitors with a wide variety of exciting activities and kilometre long sandy beaches.

The beaches, which are amongst the best in Northern Europe, feature beautiful white dunes, fine sand and clear water – and the water isn’t the only thing that’s blue. Blokhus’ beaches have received the E.U. beach-quality award: the blue flag.

BlokhusIn addition to its beaches, Blokhus itself is a lively and bustling place. Most of the shops, restaurants, inns and ice-cream bars are gathered around the bowling centre and the town square. This is also where concerts and other activities take place in the summer months. There are a number of inviting shops and restaurants, the latter often with outdoor seating. In the summer months you’ll also find a comfortable nightlife in the town. Blokhus also has a wide variety of accommodation including hotels, holiday centres, campsites and holiday cottages.

Behind the town and its beach a countryside of gentle forestry, dunes and heathland stretches, ideal for rambling, horse riding and cycling. Directly north of the town is a pleasant and peaceful area of be-planted dunes: Blokhus Klitplantage, which plays host to a wide variety of animal life. In part of the wood, dog-owners are allowed to let their animals off the leash, and there are good views across the landscape to be had from many points. The be-planted dunes in Hune and Kryle Klit create a beautiful and changing landscape. Blokhus klitplantage measures 642 hectares.

In and around Blokhus you’ll find a number of small museums, galleries and workshops where craftsmen can be found at work. The area around Blokhus also has its fair share of golf-courses, and the keen angler will find enough to keep him occupied – you can fish directly from the beach.
