11 marathons in North Jutland

Asphalt, cobblestones, gravel, sand or forest floor? There’s plenty of opportunity to take on a challenge on all types of surface in North Jutland. Between April and December no less than 11 very different marathons will be held in the region, either in an urban environment or through areas of unspoilt countryside.

2010 will see many new marathons being held in North Jutland. On 4 September a marathon will be held for only the second time in National Park Thy.

Nationalpark Thy Marathon represents a chance to run in fresh sea air and enjoy an unforgettable experience of nature. The marathon route follows the coastal road through Hanstholm wildlife reserve. It’s one of the country’s largest conservation areas and is often referred to as Denmark’s last true wilderness. At Hanstholm the route climbs upwards to offer a great view to the south. The last half of the route goes through the plantation of Tved Klitplntage and east of the beautifully clear waters of the lake at Nors Sø, which is one of the absolute highlights of the national park.

Fjordmarathon was the second new marathon in North Jutland in 2009 and was expected to attract around 6000 runners. The race toke place in and around Aalborg and the Limfjord. You’ll will again in 2010 be able to enjoy a varied experience on attractive roads and paths in and around Aalborg and Nørresundby and the route will follow a single route with no repeated sections, thus avoiding the monotony of short multiple loops.

It’s not only the race itself which was new, but the way in which you could take part also representet an innovative step, since you had the option of running a relay marathon.

Blokhus Marathon is a run through the summer landscape in and around the small seaside town of Blokhus. Blokhus Marathon is a varied experience on pleasant forest and gravel paths, in scenic dunes and along the spectacular North Sea coast on broad sandy beaches with plenty of chance to experience cheering and shouts of encouragement from the many holiday guests in the area.

North Jutland also has other smaller marathons during the course of the year, ranging from Uhrskov’s marathon in April through the forest on paths and gravel tracks to the punishing hills of Aalborg Brutal Marathon, as well as the chance to experience an island marathon in Læsø Marathon in June. Apart from Brutal Marathon, all these events can be run as a ½ marathon or over shorter distances.
